Iowa DNR Seeking CWD Ambassadors

Iowa DNR Seeking CWD Ambassadors

The Iowa DNR recently announced the launch of the Chronic Wasting Disease Ambassadors program, a collaborative education initiative between the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach. This program aims to empower Iowa residents to tackle the challenges posed by chronic wasting disease through education and community engagement.

Hunters, landowners, and conservationists interested in learning more about CWD are invited to attend a comprehensive course on June 11, 18, and 25 at the Rathbun Fish Hatchery in Appanoose County.

Program Highlights

The course will provide valuable insights into:

  • Best Practices for Disease Prevention: Learn how to prevent the spread of CWD and maintain healthy deer populations.
  • Tissue Sample Collection: Gain hands-on experience in collecting tissue samples for CWD testing.
  • Community Education: Develop skills to educate others in your community about managing and mitigating CWD.

The goal of the program is to create a network of knowledgeable local leaders who can effectively communicate and implement CWD management strategies within their communities.

“Partnerships are key to the effective management of chronic wasting disease,” said Tyler Harms, biometrician for the Iowa DNR and co-organizer of the course. “We need hunters, landowners, and interested conservationists working together to slow the spread of this disease.”
