Public Meeting Being Held After CWD Found in Waushara County, WI

The first case of CWD has been discovered in a deer in Waushara County, Wisconsin (the first case in the county, that is. Not the state). The infected deer, a mature buck, was found dead in February and tested as part of the Wisconsin DNR’s routine surveillance efforts.

The discovery in Waushara County marks a significant geographical expansion of the disease within Wisconsin. Until now, CWD had primarily been confined to southern and western parts of the state. "The detection of CWD in Waushara County is concerning and highlights the importance of continued vigilance and testing," said DNR Secretary Preston Cole. "Our primary goal is to monitor and manage the spread of this disease to protect our wildlife resources and hunting traditions."

In response to the detection, the DNR has scheduled a public meeting to gather input from the public and educate people on what they think they know about CWD. The meeting will take place at 6pm, May 20 at the Wautoma WWII Memorial Building located at 440 W Main St. They also plan on setting up additional CWD sampling stations and encouraging hunters to submit harvested deer for testing - the usual MO.

Hunters and residents in Waushara County are urged to report any sightings of deer exhibiting symptoms of CWD and to follow proper carcass disposal protocols to prevent environmental contamination. The DNR also advises hunters to practice safe handling and processing techniques, including wearing gloves and minimizing contact with the animal's brain and spinal cord.

The spread of CWD poses a significant challenge for wildlife management in Wisconsin. Since its first detection in the state in 2002, CWD has been found in 26 counties. The DNR continues to work with local communities, hunters, and other stakeholders to implement strategies aimed at controlling the disease, including targeted culling and deer movement restrictions. So far though, they don’t seem to be working. Time for a new approach? We think so. Show up to the meeting and share your opinion. We plan on being there.
